Prize-winning author Will Self joins a panel discussion on the difficulties inherent in translation, with particular reference to Franz Kafka and his short story A Country Doctor.

Eminent translators and academic specialists, including Dr Anthea Bell, Dr Joyce Crick, Prof. Amanda Hopkinson and myself, aim to help Will Self (a non-German reader) with the complexities of Kafka's German as he writes a literary essay commissioned by the London Review of Books.

Translation’s Added Value

In the latest in our public lecture series on translation, Professor Theo Hermans (Centre for Intercultural Studies, UCL) will argue that translations add value to the texts they represent because they communicate about these texts even as they represent them. He will suggest that all translation, whether dissonant or consonant or indifferent, has the translator's value judgements inscribed in it.
